Maradona's dental 'overhaul' killed him
In 2007 he went to Columbia's star dentist to get a Hollywood smile... then his life fell apart.
The youtube version
I’m not a huge football (soccer) fan but even I’d heard of the case of Maradona who died in 2020 at just 60 years old.
He died at a time when I’d already known all of the patterns to pay attention to and he simply ticked all the boxes.
World-class footballer that had an amazing skull when he was young rapidly turns obese and has a whirlwind of health issues that end in his early demise.
Quick Google search back at the time of his death on whether he did dental work and bang… I was right again.
The pattern was just so tight.
Let’s talk today about how Maradona is a classic case of “death through orthodontics”.
Who was Maradona?
Diego Maradona was one of football's greatest legends, born into poverty in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1960.
From his earliest days in the Villa Fiorito slum, he showed extraordinary talent with a football, earning the nickname "El Pibe de Oro" (The Golden Boy).
Despite his humble beginnings and limited access to proper dental care in his youth, his natural abilities would propel him to become one of the most famous athletes in history.
His career
Maradona's career was marked by incredible achievements and moments of pure genius on the field.
He led Argentina to World Cup victory in 1986, scoring what is widely considered the "Goal of the Century" against England. His ability to dribble past multiple defenders and control the ball as if it were attached to his feet made him legendary.
At club level, he achieved god-like status in Naples, leading Napoli to their only two Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990.
His combination of technical skill, vision, and creative genius made him arguably the greatest footballer of his generation, rivaled only by Pelé in the history of the sport.
He retired in 1997 at age 37.
His dental overhaul
In 2007 Maradona underwent a "smile design" treatment in Colombia by one of the nation’s most famous dentists, Marlon Becerra.
The work reportedly included multiple implants, crowns, and significant alterations to his bite. The media celebrated his new smile as part of his "transformation," with many outlets praising how much younger and healthier he appeared.
The dental work was extensive and changed not just his smile but the entire relationship between his upper and lower jaw. His new teeth were whiter, straighter, and gave him what appeared to be a perfect Hollywood smile.
His health decline
While the media portrayed his dental work as part of a positive transformation, Maradona's health began to decline notably in the years that followed.
Though nobody made the connection to the dental work of course.
The dental work fundamentally altered his bite and most definitely flattened the ‘curve of spee’ that I talk about… thus triggering what I recognize as the "deflating balloon" effect on his skull and soft tissue.
As you can see it completely evaporated his profile and the contours of his face.
This biomechanical ‘collapse’ always leads to various health issues as the skeleton twists and organs get compressed and displaced.
His weight fluctuated dramatically, and he struggled with various health issues that seemed to accelerate after the dental work.
While at the time everyone attributed these problems to his lifestyle choices, I don’t think that was the case at all.
His death
Maradona passed away on November 25, 2020, at just 60 years old, from heart failure.
While his death was attributed to various factors including his history with drugs and lifestyle choices, he died extremely young for someone who had been an elite athlete.
And when I hear of a star athlete getting heavy into drugs while he’s simultaneously falling apart… i always attribute the relationship to drugs to the collapse.
Basically he was probably trying to subconsciously escape all the shit that his body and skull were going through as it collapsed and this turned him to drugs.
I talk about how i went through a similar experience with alcohol.
And how now I went from drinking myself to sleep most nights in late 2019 to barely drinking more than a couple beers a month now…. despite having made absolutely zero effort to make this change.
I fixed the structure and my desire to drink alcohol went out the window.
I just got back from a 10 day vacation with my family where I could have drank everynight had I wished. I had one beer the whole time.
Not because i tried.. i simply didn’t want the shit.
Closing thoughts
Maradona's case is a classic one.
His ‘dental transformation’ was praised in the media. For awhile you could see him smiling everywhere he went.
Then it all came crashing down. His skull was collapsing in and his skeleton twisting, which probably led him to the drugs.
Then at just age 60 it was all she wrote. He was dead.
Why? Because a simple guy from a poor neighborhood that became one of the most recognized names in sports of the time wanted the ‘Hollywood smile’ that he thought people of his fame should have.
And he paid the price with his life.

Whilst I do not doubt your analysis, expertise and recognition from started from his dental corrections. No doubt, he was truly one of the greatest football players that has ever kicked a ball. – More amazing than Messi in his prime. However, I must correct you that Maradona was involved in one of the biggest football scandals, which the romantics labelled as 'Hand of God'. Prior to scoring that second goal, where he dribble past almost the entire England team. Amazing. The first goal was scored with his hand ! Maradona was just 5' 4", far too short to jump higher than the oncoming England goal keeper, Peter Shilton at 6'. The referee and linesman must have been 'blinded by his brilliance' in 1986. Nonetheless, Maradona was the poster boy of the tournament and FIFA needed a superstar to win the World Cup. That's sport! Anyhow, it was Steve Hodge (one of the England players) that ultimately had the last laugh. He asked for Maradona's shirt from the match, as its custom and after Maradona died, he auctioned it for $9m. Boom.
Speaking of soccer, Messi is my son’s favorite. He’s pretty obsessed with the sport. I just hope he didn’t get an elbow to the jaw…Ken, do you believe in cleanings? My son does have a cleaning coming up. No fluoride .. Would you allow your kids to get cleanings?
