Function = Form
You don't improve one without improving the other. And this tremendously simplifies how you play this game of life.
I’m going to get a bit philosophical today.
And I also want to thank my doctor penpal, EGR, as the core logic that I’m about to lay out today was something he conveyed to me yesterday via some voicenotes. And I thought its a useful thing to think about and is worth sharing.
So the core idea is that form and function are the same.
And today i’m going to explore what this means and what the implications are.
First let’s lay out what ‘function’ is
Function is to me things like your cognitive function, your neurological function, your energy, your immune system, etc.
Basically how well do you perform as a human being if aesthetics were a non-factor? For example if we lived in a dark world and nobody could see each other.
These things that I call ‘function’ are key to how you are able to connect and inter-relate with other humans.
It is key to how well you do your job and make money.
It is key to living a long, healthy life.
I think you get the idea.
Now let’s lay out what form is
By form i’m referring to the aesthetics. Things like:
how symmetric is your face?
how good is your body?
These are key things to how beautiful you are and therefore how you attract others.
Looksmaxxers, for example, chase form as the primary goal.
They’re looking at how good your profile is, how defined your features are, etc.
And they almost consider it in isolation… because you don’t hear them talking much about function.
Does Reviv fix form or function? Or both?
Lots of folks ask me if Reviv improves aesthetics.
In part because when I tell my own story I focus much more on function. As that side has always been far more important to me because I saw what it was like to have a severe drop in my function.
Like in 2014 when the dentist drilled my teeth and I couldn’t retain information plus I became a hermit for months.
That shit is scary. It changes you forever when you see what that looks like.
But as that was happening the aesthetic side also plummeted for me. I was a pretty good looking guy most of my life and there were points in 2014 and the years after where I really looked horrible.
I got used to women not paying attention to me. Despite the fact that till about age 37 I had no problems attracting women.
But it didn’t matter to me at that point. In part because i had a wife and child, but also because I realized that function was just a lot more important.
I needed to be able to function in life to enjoy it and provide for my family.
And as my function improved, the aesthetic part also improved… but I just didn’t pay nearly as much attention to it.
So both were fixing and moving in tandem. I focused on function… and form came along for the ride.
You cant change one without changing the other
This is the thing that I realized, which has been EGR’s experience as well…. you do not change function without fixing form and vice versa.
There is no such thing as a technique that only improves how you look, but does not improve how you function.
They need to move together.
Which is something i’ve noticed with anyone i talked with who I thought achieved true structural change. They might have been trying to get rid of their brain fog, but they also got better looking in the process.
And i’ve also noticed it going in the reverse direction.
If someone had more health issues, aesthetics always descended with it.
Which if you think of my soft tissue theory makes a lot of sense. You can think of the soft tissue as a full body wetsuit covering everything and when it deflates it:
makes you less symmetric because bones are moved out of position
crushes your skull thus deteriorating cognitive and neurological function
twists organs out of place and plummets your health
You cannot become less symmetric without also interfering with the brain and the other organs. It’s that simple.
You are the body
This was another related point by EGR and I think it’s an interesting one. His point is that there is no separate body and brain.
Everything is the body. The brain is part of the body.
It is all operating at some fundamental level trying to keep us alive. At some cellular level there is no real ‘you’… there are just a bunch of cells that were programmed in a way to keep us alive.
And like a river that is flowing downhill will always find a way around whatever barrier and continue to flow. The body will continually seek a way to survive because that is what it was programmed to do.
And that explains why it compensates so well. To survive.
So your aesthetics essentially are a direct reflection of how well you, as a human, are functioning. It’s not simply how beautiful you are.. it is how healthy you are, how well you digest and retain information, how well you read and others interact with others, etc.
Sure it might seem like there are some people out there who seem to be exceptions… but I think you will find that this rule is far more consistent than you would initially think.
Closing thoughts
When you think of things in this simplistic way, that form and function are the same thing, it really simplifies what to focus on when optimizing yourself for the future.
There is no such thing as:
I’m going to work ‘just’ on my breathing
I’m going to try to ‘just’ improve my memory
I’m going to try to ‘just’ improve my profile
They are all just different facets of the same thing. This body.
Which at a rudimentary level is just a whole bunch of cells that were programmed to survive and will compensate as necessary to make that happen.
Therefore your singular focus in life to optimize how healthy and happy you are should pretty much just be these biomechanics.
Because all the other 2nd and 3rd level stuff that you write on your list of new years resolutions… come along for the ride.
